When the novel coronavirus outbreak in New York City reached a state of emergency, the Office of Residential Life mandated residential students to return home immediately and not come back to campus. At Fordham University, many students consider the University to be their primary residence during the academic year, and the mandate left many students struggling to coordinate their housing and travel plans.

COVID-19 Impacts Student and Aramark Employees

Fordham’s decision to complete the spring semester online due to the outbreak of COVID-19 has prompted concerns about university employees’ incomes, as precautions taken by the state, city and university to limit exposure to the virus prevent student workers from completing their work-study hours and have led to dining staff layoffs.

Due to the recent suspension of all on-campus events and face-to-face classes, Fordham will only continue to distribute information about community members who test positive if they have been on campus within two weeks of their diagnosis.

First Cases of COVID-19 Confirmed on Campus

On March 19, The Office of the President emailed the Fordham community confirming the first case of coronavirus in an undergraduate Fordham student. The student left campus on March 10 and began exhibiting symptoms of the virus on March 15.
