Fordham Faculty Member Passes Away

Rev. John Adam, S.J., a longtime member of the Fordham community who taught at Fordham College at Lincoln Center (FCLC) from 1971 to 1994, died on April 15. He was 83.Adam returned to his home country of Hungary in 1994 nearly 40 years after he fled the then-communist rule. Adam became the first provincial of the Hungarian Province of the Society of Jesus and died at a Jesuit community in Hungary after a long illness.

Adam first came to Fordham in 1962 to teach philosophy at the Graduate School of Education. In 1971 he began teaching at FCLC, where he remained for 23 years.

“Father Adam was not only a colleague of mine for about 30 years but also one of the very best teachers and leaders among the faculty,” said Anne Mannion, associate professor of history. “If one is looking for an exemplar of Cura Personalis… one did not have to look any farther than John Adam. His friends take comfort in knowing that he was were he truly wanted to be doing what he wanted to be doing and did so well.”

A mass was held for Adam at the Jesuit community Miskolc, Hungary on April 23. A ceremony was also held in the Blessed Rupert Mayer Chapel on the same day.
