On Feb. 12, music’s biggest stars arrived at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to see if they would go home winners at the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards. If you didn’t think the Grammys were exciting enough to watch, Adele literally pulled a “Mean Girls” and broke her award for Album of the Year in two pieces! This was just one of the many highlights from the beloved awards show. Three of the music industry’s queens, Beyoncé, Adele and Rihanna, took the nominations by storm with multiple nominations for the night. The night also included incredible performances from artists like Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga with Metallica, Adele, Beyoncé and many more.

Everyone had their eyes on the night’s most nominated artists, like Beyoncé with nine nominations and Rihanna, Drake and Kanye West with eight nominations each. Chance the Rapper received seven nominations and Adele, who opened the show, racked up five nominations.

The night was full of surprises for all of the artists. After receiving so many nominations, one could only expect Queen Bey to walk away with more than she did. But, she left walking home with only 2 awards out of her 9 nominations. Adele seemed to have the best night of all with five awards including the night’s biggest award, Album of the Year! The “Hello” singer also took home the awards for Best Pop Vocal Album, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. For the newcomer that he is, Chance the Rapper also won a fair amount of awards, taking home Grammys for Best New Artist, Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance. Also in the rap categories, Drake and Kanye West weren’t among the big winners list, seeing that Drake only won two awards for Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best Rap Song, while Kanye didn’t win any. Rihanna fans were also left disappointed when she lost in every category she was nominated in.

The Recording Academy is notorious for making some questionable decisions in who they choose to take home GRAMMY Awards, and this year was no different. Rihanna lost a total of 8 times, and people were outraged that the Barbadian beauty didn’t get a single award. She didn’t seem to upset about it because she was dancing, facetiming and drinking during the awards ceremony.  Kanye, who has always been pretty vocal with his outrage, was completely silent about losing as well.

One of the most notable moments of the night was Adele’s acceptance speech for “Album of the Year” for her album “25.” Beyoncé was her humble self as Adele got on stage and accepted her award, but she thanked Beyoncé before she even thanked the Academy. Tears streamed down her face while she said, “I can’t possibly accept this award. I’m very humbled and very grateful and gracious, but my life is Beyoncé.” Completely shocked, everyone listened intently, and the camera turned to Beyoncé, who also had tears in her eyes as she listened to Adele’s speech.

“The ‘Lemonade’ album, Beyoncé, was so monumental, and so well thought out, and so beautiful and soul-bearing,” she continued. “And we all got to see another side of you that you don’t always let us see, and we appreciate that. And all us artists adore you. You are our light. And the way that you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel, is empowering, and you make them stand up for themselves. And I love you. I always have. And I always will.”

Pictures then emerged on the internet after the Grammys was over of Adele with a broken statuette and everyone immediately thought of the moment in “Mean Girls.” There isn’t a video because the camera had just cut right when Adele’s Grammy broke. But she had a great laugh over it and so did Beyoncé. Complex News reports that the Grammy statue that they are given on stage aren’t even real. They’re just a prop. The artists receive the real Grammy award in about 60 days. When Adele got backstage she was handed another Grammy to take photos with.

While winning numerous awards throughout the night, Adele performed twice. Opening the show, she performed her award-winning song, “Hello.” Her most notable performance of the night, however, came when she did a haunting, slowed-down rendition of George Michael’s “Fastlove Pt. 1” as a tribute to the late singer. In the middle of her performance, she felt that she messed up but then dropped an F-bomb, stopping mid song and apologizing, saying, “I’m sorry for swearing. I can’t mess this up for him.” She proceeded to deliver an awe-inspiring performance.

After announcing she was pregnant with twins, everyone wondered if Beyoncé was going to cancel her scheduled performance. Nope. She took the stage, embracing her baby bump and dressed in an ensemble that was inspired by the African goddess Oshun一the goddess of beauty and fertility. Queen Bey is known for her incredible visuals, and this time she delivered a mesmerizing piece of art that will go down in the history books. Performing the songs “Love Drought” and “Sandcastles” from “Lemonade,” she didn’t miss a note while gracefully taking the stage. Once her performance was over, the crowd gave her the standing ovation that she so rightfully deserved.

Artists of today sang in tribute to honor some of music’s legends like The Bee Gees and Prince. Bruno Mars took the stage with The Time to perform the band’s classics like “Jungle Love” and “The Bird.” Mars also took on Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” dressed as the icon.

The last surviving member of the Bee Gees, Barry Gibb, also attended the GRAMMY Awards this year to see the tribute that was performed by artists Demi Lovato, Tori Kelly, Andra Day and Little Big Town. Demi took on the hit, “Stayin’ Alive,” which catapulted the group to success when it was released in 1977. Tori Kelly showed off her beautiful vocals singing “Tragedy,” Andra Day sang “Night Fever” and Little Big Town crooned a beautiful rendition of “How Deep is Your Love?”

Perhaps the most surprising was Lady Gaga’s performance with metal band Metallica. After a smash halftime performance at Super Bowl LI, Mother Monster performed “Moth into the Flame” with the band. All in all, we got to see Lady Gaga show off her diversity and do what everyone is too afraid to do―crowd surf.

Overall, this year’s Grammys was full of surprises from the snubs and the crazy wardrobe choices to Beyoncé’s pregnancy performance. Let’s see what next year has in store for us when the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards rolls around.
