Inside Trump’s Days at Fordham
January 26, 2017
President Donald Trump likes to talk about the fact that he went to the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, mentioning his academic achievement in his book “The Art of the Deal” and throughout his presidential campaign.
Trump, however, did not spend all four years of his college career at the University of Pennsylvania’s prestigious business school. Before earning his degree in economics, he was a student at Fordham College at Rose Hill (FCRH) for two years.
Today’s Fordham students expressed mixed feelings about Donald Trump’s time at the Rose Hill campus. Ranging from indifference to happiness to one sophomore feeling “terrible” that the President’s name is tied to her college.
Although Trump boasted about attending Wharton, Fordham wasn’t his first choice of college, and real estate wasn’t his first choice of career either. Trump originally wanted to be a movie producer, according to Newsweek. When he was rejected from the University of Southern California, he chose to attend Fordham until he eventually decided to pursue business and transfer to the University of Pennsylvania. “That’s where he got in,” Trump’s sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, said regarding his decision to go to Fordham in Gwenda Blair’s “The Trumps: Three Generations of Builders and a Presidential Candidate.”
During Trump’s time at Fordham, he would’ve studied topics such as Islam, Socrates, Aristotle and logic, according to John T. Carey, FCRH ’68, in The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Trump also chose to attend Fordham at a historical time for the university. Joan Ann Poroski had just become one of the first women admitted to the university’s undergraduate student population, as reported by The Fordham Ram at the time. Trump himself, however, did not leave “footprints” at Fordham, despite playing squash, according to President of the Fordham College Alumni Association Paul F. Gerken, FCRH ’68, in The Chronicle.
The Fordham community, however, was not the only place that Trump didn’t leave his footprints during his college years. Using his status as a college student, Trump successfully received draft deferments for the entirety of his college career, avoiding service in the Vietnam War.
“Trump had avoided the draft—and the possibility of being sent to fight in the Vietnam War—by obtaining four separate deferments so he could stay at Fordham University and the University of Pennsylvania,” according to The Washington Post.
Even though he could have been conscripted once he graduated, he was “medically disqualified” after he failed an armed forces physical examination on Sept. 17, 1968, two months after he graduated from Penn. His disqualification resulted from “small bone growths on his feet called heel spurs,” according to The Times (London).
Trump’s days at Fordham concluded with the end of the spring 1966 semester. “I decided that as long as I had to be in college, I might as well test myself against the best,” Trump wrote in “The Art of the Deal” on his decision to transfer to Wharton. With the help of an admissions officer who was a high school classmate of Trump’s older brother, Freddy, he traded the ivy-mantled walls of Fordham’s Rose Hill campus for an ivy league degree.
Trump’s short time at Fordham has left students with mixed feelings about his attendance, but some students such as Kyoka Millard, Fordham College at Lincoln Center (FCLC) ’19, would rather just forget that he went there. “I feel pretty terrible about it,” she said regarding the President’s connection to the college. “I’m really proud of the fact that Fordham has kind of disavowed him and been very open about being welcome to immigrants.” Fordham President Rev. Joseph M. McShane, S.J., recently pledged his support for undocumented students in a written statement emailed to students.
Other students who voted for Trump, such as Andrew Budisak, FCLC ’20, hope that students on all sides of the discussions over Trump can see eye to eye.
“Not everyone on either side is representative of the candidate as a person and no one is a representation of their whole party,” he said. “Although you have the right to disagree and be angry and have fear, there comes a point where you need to actually unite and discuss to actually get things done.”
Trump may have left Fordham for the same reason as most transfer students: the college just wasn’t for him.
“I think there’s a good reason he didn’t stay for all four years,” Renee Garrahan, FCLC ’18, said. “I don’t think it was the right fit for him.”

And now, instead of the Orange guy you have a Democrat. A near senile, feeble, man with over a 40 year history of lying, racism, and being on the wrong side of nearly every issue. . Basically, the Village Idiot. Look at the mess he’s made in only 2 months. Pathetic!

President Donald Trump has made a living from being less than he can be or should be, as a business man and a political figure and a specialist in deflecting attention from his shortcomings. The historical narrative of the attempted second impeachment of President Donald Trump might reflect that it could not be proven that his actions were the soul catalyst for the offensive against the Capitol building, but impeachment outcomes are never the reflection of guilt or innocence. Only political will that is reflective of the political positions of the respective political parties. Nevertheless, as a minimum – history will not fail to recognize, demonstrate and record that President Donald Trump has been the only American President who could not be relied on to speak out and do his genuine best to (as a minimum) attempt to avert the conflict that culminated in the storming of Capitol Hill..
That realization by the American people that Donald Trump could not conduct himself in a manner that reflects the best interests of the people and the country he was elected to represent, is the historical narrative that an impeachment doesn’t require and led to his failure to secure a second term. Job done.

Trump has done more for the U.S. than any President in the last few decades. Just look it up. Stop being in your feelings all the time and directing your own hate and problems at the President of the United States. You guys sound like little babies. You cry too much.

On Jan 6th, 2021, in case it was not abundantly clear already, his incitement to riot in DC that left one person dead is all the evidence we need to be grateful that he never graduated from Fordham.
Goodbye, good riddance to the least qualified person who ever ascended to the White House.
Jean • Sep 3, 2024 at 10:07 am
Darned shame he’s come back around for “another bite of the apple”, as my grandmother would say.
He’s even worse than EVER before! His dementia is showing, billy, as well as his malignant narcissism. His pick as his VP has alternated almost every female in this country and is part & parcel of them dropping in favourabilty, which is a HYUGE bonus.
After POTUS did a HUGELY honorable action, we now have the person who scares the ever-living 💩 outta TFG — a Black, South Asian WOMAN!!!
Geoff • Oct 26, 2020 at 4:56 pm
The person that wrote this piece does so, not as a political statement. It is to draw attention to the dangers of people in positions of influence who have the responsibility of using that influence for the purpose of improving the survival potential of those that he or she represents and choosing to not do so. Leaders should always choose to be helpful in times like these, not obstructionist. If support of this ideology is (in your view)immoral – yep – guilty as charged.
Tom • Oct 24, 2020 at 12:26 pm
I left the Democratic Party 20 years ago. Can you guess why? Morals. I came to realize that the entire Democratic Party has no morals. Whoever wrote this piece tells me again and again how absolutely correct I was.

Yeah, the Trumpie Party (formerly the GOP) has all the morals.
Jean • Sep 3, 2024 at 10:14 am
Yes indeedy, morals are so much a part of the GQP/GOP now, aren’t they?? 🤣🤣🤣
They have so many morals now it would take years, weeks, days, hours, minutes, seconds to list all the morals the GQP/GOP have nowadays, wouldn’t it?? 😉😉😉

Dear Mel Brooks. Sorry mate. I think I’ve inadvertently dropped you in it. Recent discussions among sophisticated and highly innovative members of the entertainment community are up in arms about your “Trump Character”. You see – Here in OZ, our entertainers have taken to confining their routines to social media. Thus, they are admirably distinguished as being responsible “Media personalities”, who practice life preserving “Safe Pandemic Practices”. (Of course, we do have the odd nutter running around, unmasked and unchecked among crowds – These are what we refer to as Carnies). Fortunately, they are a dying breed. (well those that don’t have access to special treatments and remedies.) But I digress. You see, within these discussions – our very own Barry Humphries is pretty “miffed” (I am told)at the portrayal of your character that he feels is not altogether dissimilar to his Sir Les Patterson Character. Now I don’t say I agree – Just a heads up, so as you aren’t ambushed. I leave you to check out Sir Les Patterson yourself, so as to be adequately armed in response to such ungracious discussion, directed (potentially) against one of the most inventive caricatures within recent living entertainment history and consequently your good name. I apologize if my enthusiastic discussion for your character has brought you unwanted attention. Cheers mate. Keep up the good work.
Geoff • Oct 6, 2020 at 9:04 am
Dear Mel Brooks – once again, your genius has come to the fore. When I suggested tidying up this Trump character so as to not scare the kids, your brilliant plan to remarket him under the “Looney Toons” banner is pure brilliance. The first episode, where the character gets coronavirus and is coptered to hospital and sneaks out of quarantine at smoko to do laps of the hospital with a car full of security guys trying to hold their breaths – priceless!! Thank heavens it’s only a cartoon. The stuntmen playing the security guards wouldn’t survive a live production, eh. Anyway, Loved Donald goes Daffy – Looking forward to the next Looney Toon episode. Once again. Mel old son – nailed it again!!

For anyone who attended Fordham around Trump’s time. Would philosophy have been a required course?
CECILIA WALSH • Jul 9, 2023 at 4:16 pm
yes, theology and philosophy..I was there as freshman when he was a sophomore..never saw him, and he is nowhere in 1966 Fordham yearbook, not even as member of squash team. He certainly did not fit in.
Geoff • Sep 7, 2020 at 3:25 pm
Dear Mel Brooks. As an Aussie who enjoys the American entertainment industry, I have always been an admirer of your over the top characters and satirical political humour. Respectfully however – I feel that in the interests of responsible viewing and editing, perhaps you could have your Trump character – either dialled down a little or moved to a more appropriate time slot that the kiddies aren’t exposed to. It’s not that I don’t appreciate satirical political humour. Some of the “border wall material” was entertaining – (the concept of building a wall to keep the best tunnellers in the world out) funny script writing. And that episode where the North Koreans went to the olympics with the South Koreans coz the little South Korean bloke reminded them that when this Trump character of yours bombs South Korea – Well – North and South are kind of attached. Ha! Brilliant!! But I must say. In this present predicament (pandemic wise) some of this Trump characters lines are scaring the kids. A few of them think he’s a fair dinkum bloke. Perhaps (just for now, please) maybe that Borat fella can fill his current time slot while you tidy the character up a tad. Anyway -Love ya work.

LAW, 2000. Disappointed but not surprised to see so many Trump supporters on here. Today we hear his own sister detailing his many flaws and unsuitability for the presidency. He has done more to destroy the foundation of the US Constitution than any President in US history, and I write this as a history grad and lawyer. It’s shocking how quickly the system has been bent, twisted and corrupted by the President and his acolytes. I hope both the institutions and people of the US can heal from this period and move on to more hopeful, compassionate, inclusive times.

Goodness sakes. I’m grossed out by the level of bias shone on both sides. Both sides like Donnie tried to say. Culpability, both sides.
No I don’t respect or admire my president, Donnie. But not because the media convinced me. Accept that but for media ie, video, audio, written accounts I would know not of this man. The total of my human instincts; my conclusions; my experiences is my opinion of disrespect. I should not have to list what it is I don’t like about him as I feel you should be seeing and feeling what I am. But we have to get it out sometimes.
I see the pleasure he gets when he screws an advosery.

Ok, I will not say anything about Mr. Trump and his association with Fordham University, though I certainly could.
What bothers me is the alumni/alumnus reference. It drives me crazy when I see license plate holders with “Alumni
University of Washington” instead of alumnus. I always want to ask, “where is the second person in the car?”
Am I alone in this???
Bryan Canniff • Jul 23, 2020 at 12:03 am
Instead of having pride in producing a President it’s a disgrace that the school allows associate professor Christina Greer to slander Their former student by portraying him as a “white suprematist” without any evidence. Shameful political bias.
Lisa Rohlfing • Jul 21, 2020 at 4:10 pm
Sad to see hatred being perpetuated like this against a sitting president. You would think the University would be proud a president would have chosen their school. Confirmation found here that this school is no longer on our list. Enough hatred in the world. As you say, it is definitely not the right fit for us”.

According to the book recently published by his niece, Mary, Trump paid one of his high school classmates to take the SATs for him. Apparently Trump was scared he wasn’t smart enough to get into the college he dreamed of buying a diploma from.
He’s not just unintelligent— he’s a fraudulent coward. Fordham should revoke every credit he earned so that UPenn has no choice but to revoke his diploma.
It’s not politics. It’s simply a matter of restoring academic integrity.
Go Rams.

A lot of hate on this post. As far as grades go in school, who cares. U.s. grant was at the bottom of his class in west point. He lead the union army to VICTORY. You know,The war that freed the slaves. Grades mean nothing. It’s what you do with your life that means something. Bill Gates drop out of college. I think he was pretty successful. I bet most of these people just hate OUR president because he beat Hillary and the media tell them to.

Abdula Bernstein • May 18, 2020 at 1:57 pm
So, you’re praying for Donald Trump to not show so much hate? Good luck with that.
You say “I have heard that if you cannot say something nice don’t say anything at all.” And then you say the meanest, sleaziest things you can find about (Democratic) figures. LOL!
When do you start following the “I have heard that if you cannot say something nice don’t say anything at all” way of thinking? Too funny!
June Thompson Wurst • May 15, 2020 at 2:48 pm
My thanks to all that have spoken out for our President. I have heard that if you cannot say something nice don’t say anything at all.
If you think we have had a perfect president, think again. John Kennedy had prostitutes brought into the WH whenever Jackie was gone. Bill Clinton we all know was “entertained” under his desk by a beautiful young woman whose life was forever changed. Obama and Hillary did so much damage to our country. Especially Benghazi where Americans died because they did not send aid and of course there are Hillary’s emails. Donald Trump did not go into the WH as a perfect person and has been treated badly by the Media.
If he could walk on water they would say it was because he could not swim.
If you go into just about anyone’s history you can find something to criticize or condemn. We can either be positive or negative, I prefer to be positive. I pray for our country and our President each day. My prayer for each of you who has so much hate in your life is that someday you find peace and happiness.
As a ps, I only have a high school education so I am sure you can find many things to critique.

It’s sad to see how many petty, juvenile closed minded hateful people are alumni of Fordham. But, that doesn’t surprise me, New York is wrought with hatefilled leftists who can’t stand anyone who doesn’t parrot their particular opinions of the world.
Objectively, Donald J Trump is a true American success story. Regardless of your politics. I’ve followed and admired his business endeavours since about 1980 when I was a Business major in college. I have not always agreed with his politics and his personality quirks, but he is an accomplished man and leader who deserves to be appreciated for his accomplishments and the overwhelming good that he has done in his life.
I know the small minded haters will never be able to have such an objective perspective, because the hate is based on emotion, not fact or reasoned thought.
I’m just glad I’m not one of you. And now, my respect for your institution has dropped a couple of notches as well.
But, have a joyful & prosperous day. Focus on your own behavior rather than on degrading & disrespecting others more accomplished than you.

I used to work at a univiersity and had access to grades, can some patriotic employee who loves America share ‘Don’s’ transcript? I find it very difficutl to believe he would be able to sit through a lecture, comprehend the material and pass a basic exam. The Government career professionals need to dumb down presentations as he does not ‘read’. The fact that a D-List Bully like him got elected is terrifying. Many of us support various Dem candidates, when the primary wraps up ALL of us need to support the BLUE candidate. No sour grapes, no apathy, no write-ins, no sulking like the Berners did in 2016. Started at Fordham in 1964, in School of Business, along with Trump. Didn’t know of him then, wish I didn’t know of him now. At our 50th Reunion in 2018, I know of no one who had any recollections of him. He was, for practical purposes, a non-entity on campus in Rose Hill.
He embodies none of the qualities of a Jesuit university, and in fact, of a Christian or of any morally ethical institution.

I’d like to know how that incompetent, reprehensible, pathological, lying bag of cow flops EVER got accepted into Fordham University. Clearly, they had a much lower set of standards in the 1960s. Trump is a disgrace to the human race and an embarrassment to those of us who were born and raised in Queens, and who worked our way through Fordham on our own merits, without a filthy rich father to buy our way through life.
He’s the Daddy of Deplorables.

Whoa! “black” — no need to bring up race – that’s Trump’s job. Don’t take away his venom. What would his tarts do without all his negative traits and no positive ones.
Trump’s parents sent him away to boarding school – and they sent him back. ‘nuf said.
He has never been decent – he was taught by his slumlord father to lie and cheat and allowed to bully. Maybe it’s why his brother died of alcoholism.
Our country is under attack … and those of us who know what a sleaze Trump is and his administration hypocrites must continue to speak out for those who can’t speak or who refuse to see the hitler in the room.

I’m probably the only Black woman on this page but I’m going to say what I got to say. This freaking article and some of these comments are stupid, bias, self-serving and ancient history. Who gives a damn about Trump at Fordham a hundred years ago? Why don’t you acknowledge what he’s doing today, Sophie, in 2019? But .. oh… I forget, the truth is not the agenda of this so call media of today in The United States of Delusions. So, let me help you out. First let’s talk about how Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital something Ovamit and three other presidents before him promised and failed to do. Oh yeah, when the regime of Bashar al-Assad used toxic nerve agents on innocent children and adults, Trump didn’t sit in the Oval Office scratching his head, he acted like a boss, bringing America’s badass reputation back, front and center on the world stage; a reputation Ovamit made worthless. I got another one for you…. How about the historic tax reform Trump enacted that has caused our economy to grow? Oh yeah and the arms package he approved for the Ukraine against the threat from Russia and shielded India’s growth against China’s domination. Or better still the restrictions Trump lifted on the military, that your beloved Ovamit had placed to protect the terrorists and their strongholds. And us Black folks who were out there complaining about the “invisible White man” that has us oppressed. Trump not anybody else said bring these oppressed people to the White House and I’ll fix it. Who showed? One person, Kim Kardashian (who I gained a new respect for) with one Black woman and Trump did what he promised. Where were all the Black folks at who were doing all this hollering and finger pointing. They were staging dumbass videos and writing stupid blogs and citing this reason for failing to answer the call, “Trump just wanted attention.” And Sophie the coup de grace…I know you’re gonna like this one…. In one final “shot heard round the world” he took down Hillary Clinton and the corrupt Clinton contraption you leaking heart liberals love so much. How bout that? Some of you are so blinded by your media fueled hatred of Trump that you refuse to acknowledge the good he’s done. Write a 100 year old blogs about Hillary Clinton’s corrupt and “Obama Bin Laden’s” fire-bombing pasts.

FCRH graduate (’12) here. Personally I’m proud that Trump found Fordham unacceptable and vice-versa. The Jesuits believe in educating ‘men (and women) for others.’ Trump is self-serving jerk. He considered himself too good for Fordham, but every time he opens his mouth it becomes increasingly apparent that Fordham is/was too good for him.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go take my heart medication. My darn liberal heart just won’t stop bleeding. Makes going out in public very awkward.

As a liberal arts graduate (class of ’67) I have a tendency to remain alert to the communications skills of those I encounter. Consequently, it didn’t escape my notice that you think Trump is keeping “his campaign promise” (singular). What promise would that be? Did he really make only one promise, or were you asleep in the back row all through 2016? I usually refrain from offering advice, but maybe it’s not too late to register for the spring semester at Wharton. My bleeding heart urges me to offer that recommendation.

Fordham fans and alumni might find this story of Trump’s time at Fordham to be fun. Joe Kelly says it is fiction but there’s certainly a lot of details from a half century back, and it sure does sound like he knew Don, as he calls him, back in the day.
