It was another glorious day for a Ram victory on Saturday at Jack Coffey field in the Bronx with vintage fall weather as Fordham outscored Lehigh 59-42. It can be best described as a barn-burner type game that saw the Rams offense lead the way to their high-scoring victory as running back Chase Edmonds once again put forward an unforgettable performance on the ground that is worthy of the record books.

The victory was won with no certainty however. Fordham’s defense, coming off a rather lackluster performance last week that saw they give up a whopping 570 yards, allowed Lehigh to take the first possession of the game and turn it into a 7-0 lead. Once again, the Rams were off to a murky start until sophomore free safety Caleb Ham snatched an interception that set up an Austin Longi touchdown reception from quarterback Kevin Anderson on the ensuing possession.

Going into the second half, Fordham trailed the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 21-17. Nevertheless, by the time the game grew close Chase Edmonds stepped up big time for the Rams. Edmonds would burst through the line with punishing speed and agility on several long runs and once the day was done he had rushed for a career-high 347 yards alongside a total of 402 all-purpose yards that included four total touchdowns.

With his mammoth performance, Edmonds broke both Fordham single-game rushing records and those of the Patriot League. The sophomore has come a long way since his game against Villanova last season when he had nine carries for negative five yards as he now sits atop the Patriot League as what Joe Moorhead considers is its best player, period. Similar to last week, the narrative of another Ram victory went as follows: the passing game faltered out of the gate, so the team turned to put Edmonds out in front and succeeded in a tremendous fashion.

The defense rebounded by generously offering the offense several opportunities due to crucial turnovers. Junior defensive back Jihaad Pretlow for example picked off a Lehigh pass after it bounced out of a receiver’s hands. Pretlow was able to then run the interception back 23 yards by cutting across the field to score a touchdown that put the game away as Fordham led 52-28 early in the fourth quarter. Lehigh would mount a small comeback, but Edmonds long runs would effectively squander any chance of a comeback for the visiting team.

The Rams, both players and coaches, can now relish in another win as they rise to 7-1 with aspirations for a memorable season ahead. They will now turn to prepare for their fight to keep their winning streak alive next Saturday, October 31st against Colgate as they travel to Hamilton, New York. Expect Head Coach Moorhead and his team to be prepared to win.
