Reid Family Prize
The Observer has been awarded the 2013 Reid Family Prize for excellence in the field of creative expression and engaged commitment to social justice. The award comes with a prize of $1,500 in addition to a $500 donation to The Observer’s chosen charity: Girls Educational and Mentoring Services.
The Observer’s submission for the Reid Family Prize was titled “Negatives” and consisted of six photographs taken by staff photographers relating to the topic of violence against women, as depicted in Lynn Nottage’s play “Ruined,” which was the theme for this year’s prize. Accompanying the photos were one-sentence poems written by Literary Editor Jacqueline Battaglia, Fordham College at Lincoln Center (FCLC) ’13.
The Observer owes many thanks to Sarah Gambito, assistant professor and director of the creative writing program at FCLC, as well as our photo advisor Amelia Hennighausen and faculty advisor Elizabeth Stone.
