A theme to match the paper’s special issue on parks. Each park clued as something else. Unfortunately, the print version of the puzzle grid lacked numbers for the colored theme answers (slightly confusing), while the online version did not have any circles or colors in the grid but only identified the theme answers by asterisks. No biggie.
Natick at 21A and 9D. According to Wiktionary, HaLLOA is equally a valid answer to the clue as HOLLOA, while GIaRNO seems possible as a random name if one is not familiar with the manga series. A clue like “A day in Rome?” would have been unambiguous.
Another Natick at 109A and 75D for some readers. I knew ALIDADE, but it is a pretty obscure word, and if one doesn’t know it, ALIDADi seems possible, and HiLDA could be an alternative to HELDA.
OTOH the otherwise unguessable PSOPHIA was crossed fairly all the way.
36A clue is a little too close to the answer, with “Perseus” in the clue and “PERSEID” the answer.
Still WOE after filling in 35A LRT from crosses: what does Edm. stand for? Is LRT Light Rail Transport and do they have it in Edmonton, Alberta? Why Edmonton, and not, say, Jersey City? Anyone clue me in?
What I learned: Fort Tryon was named for the last British governor of NY. Very broad-minded of us to keep it.
Favorite clue: 105A.
