Show Off Your Fever for Fashion in This Groovy Garb

By MOLLY MCLOONE

With the recent runway revival of fashions reminiscent of “Mad Men,” it’s only fair that styles from a more carefree era get a turn—the ’70s. Just in time for summer, an abundance of great styles have become available and are sure to be staples in our wardrobes for the coming months.

’70s-inspired looks were all over the runways for spring at Fendi, Yves Saint Laurent and Marc Jacobs, among others. The key to getting this trend right is taking inspiration from the era and putting a modern spin on it. I’ve mapped out seven key pieces to get the ’70s look right and to help you sail through the summer in style.

1. Wide Leg or Flare Jeans

It’s time to give your jeggings a break and embrace this style, one of the most epitomizing of the decade. Unlike the original introduction of wide leg jeans, the styles available now are sleeker, with a manageable flare and high waist. Pair them with a tucked-in blousy top and chic skinny belt, and you’re all set!

2. Perfect Accessories

The perfect ’70s-inspired accessories, with a modern twist, of course, will allow you to add subtle hints of the era to your look. The key pieces? A slouchy, supple leather bag, chunky accessories, or a just-skinny-enough leather belt.

3. Spice-Toned Suede

While fringed vests and mini skirts were the suede mainstays of the era, the styles today have a mod twist—sleek lines and classic shapes. Suede for summer got you worried? The light tones make it work.

4. Flowy Pieces

As I’ve mentioned above, loose blouses are a key—and versatile—look to work into your wardrobe. Tucked into flare jeans, or a long skirt for a total blousy look, this is one of the most important pieces to have this summer.

Hair of the ’70s might bring to mind images of Farrah Fawcett’s famous feathered waves, but the look now is much sleeker. Middle parts with luxurious waves do the trick. Try a boho-inspired hair accessory or large barrette pulling your hair to the side for a fun look.
