Simplify Your Beauty Routine with Five Essential Products
August 3, 2011
The onset of spring weather warrants a revamp to not only your wardrobe but your makeup bag as well. Beauty routines in warmer weather call for lighter formulas and easier applications because no one wants to spend gorgeous spring days inside applying makeup!
You can easily achieve a fresh beauty routine for spring without having to look too far or break the bank. Drugstores offer many great beauty products that boast the same benefits and results as higher-end lines.
Easy beauty requires five basic, yet essential, products: a daily SPF moisturizer, mascara, concealer, blush and lipstick.
1. SPF Moisturizer
A great moisturizer with SPF can easily be found in the aisles of anyDuane Reade in the city; there is no need to splurge here. Olay and Neutrogena both offer great products, though my recent favorite is Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 ($14.99).
This moisturizer has a high enough SPF to keep you protected throughout the day, but is lightweight enough that you don’t have to worry about irritated skin. Though SPF should be worn all year long, it is even more important to wear it in the warmer months when the sun’s rays are strongest.
2. Concealer
Concealer suffers from the common misconception that it is only supposed to be used for covering up blemishes and imperfections on the skin.
But a quality concealer, such as M.A.C. Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35, $17, can be used for so much more. It can be used to hide under-eye circles, and when dabbed on lips it is a great foundation for glossy, nude lips or to ensure that a colored lipstick stays in place.
3. Lipstick
Bright pops of color are huge for spring. Instead of spending a lot of money on one shade of a pricy lipstick, why not pick up Sephora Collection Rouge Cream Lipstick, ($12)?
The quality of Sephora’s lipstick is amazing and they offer a creamy and moisturizing boost of color to your lips.
At such a reasonable price, you can try as many colors as you want! I recommend “It Girl 06” and “Love Test 11” for a great tangerine and fuchsia lip covering, respectively.
If colored lips aren’t your thing, but you still want to try bright shades for spring, N.Y.C. New York Color Duet Blendable Brights Eye Shadow ($2.99) offers bright yellows and pinks that can be used boldly on your entire lid, or subtly along the lash line.
4. Mascara
You don’t need to splurge on mascara to achieve a glamorous look. My current favorite is L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara in Blackest Black ($8.99). This mascara promises to “millionize” your lashes, and a quick eyelash curl and two coats later, my lashes were both longer and fuller, an accomplishment many types of mascara claim but can’t actually deliver on.
5. Blush
Great blush is a must-have for the spring. Since you will be wearing SPF, blush allows your cheeks to appear to have that sun-kissed glow, without the harmful affects of harsh sunlight.
My standby for over a year now has been M.A.C. Powder Blush in Dollymix ($19.50). A little of this blush goes a long way, and will leave your cheeks looking naturally flushed. This blush also looks great on top of concealer and under gloss on the lips, or lightly dusted on eyes with black liner for a playful look.
