Fordham College at Lincoln Center (FCLC) held its annual Spring Fling carnival on April 28. This year’s theme was “Back to the Past” and included activities such as carnival games, prizes and snacks. There was also a movie screening of “Back to the Future” later in the evening and a Barbeque. However, instead of being in its usual spot on the outdoor plaza, the event was moved into the cafeteria atrium and student lounge due to weather conditions.

According to Dorothy Wenzel, the director of Student Leadership and Community Development, the event was originally planned so that the construction work done on the outdoor plaza would not effect Spring Fling. However, the migration of the event from outdoors to indoors was due to the rain.

Apart from the traditional carnival games, this year’s event included new activities this year. Wenzel said it included laser tag, a photo booth, an Easter egg hunt, and caricatures.

Although the rain cut the game short, Joseph Pellicone, FCLC ’12, said he was still happy that the game was there.

“It was awesome. When I walked in and saw the laser tag, I ran for it.”

Also, Wenzel talked about the new Easter egg hunt that was added to this year’s Spring Fling. Wenzel said that eggs were placed around the Lowenstein and outdoor plaza from April 26-28. The eggs contained a slip of paper that identified the prize. However there was only one golden egg which contained the largest prize, a Nintendo 3DS. Students who found the other eggs won either an iPod Shuffle, one of a variety of gift cards, or a candy bar.

As for the movie screening of “Back to the Future,” it was originally meant to be outdoors. Matthew Ortiz, FCLC ’12 and a member of the Spring Fling committee, said, “The movie took place in the cafeteria. [W]e had a projector and projected the movie against that large white wall.”

Erica Castro, FCLC ’14, said she felt the timing was right for the Spring Fling. She said, “It is a good stress reliever, especially with finals coming up. They should have this more often.”

In addition, students were upset that there was no food during the first part of the carnival. Many students thought that the food should have been available during the activity block instead of later in the evening. Castro said, “Everyone is upset and complaining because there is no food.”

Despite the rain, Aisha Blake, FCLC ’13, said, “The stands still had a tent above them that looked like the ones in carnivals so even though it was in the atrium, the atmosphere still had Spring Fling.”

“I thought [the Spring Fling committee] did well with the situation…they took one for the team by continuing the event and moving it into the atrium,” Blake said.
