Elliott Copeland, Gabelli Student, Dies From Injuries
June 20, 2016
On June 19, Elliott Copeland, a rising senior in the Gabelli School of Business at Rose Hill, died from injuries he sustained last week after being hit by a car in Manhattan.
Joseph McShane, SJ, president of Fordham University, informed the Fordham community via email on June 20 that Copeland, a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, had succumbed to the injuries from the incident. The New York Police Department is investigating his death, which appears to be an accident.
McShane stated, “Accident or not, this is a terrible blow for his family and friends, and of course to the University community. We will support Elliott’s family as best we can in their grief, and will likewise do everything in our power to help his friends and loved ones at Fordham cope with his loss.”
“It goes without saying that Elliott’s family and loved ones will be in our prayers this week,” McShane continued. “They have sustained a terrible loss, and our hearts are broken for them, and for Elliott. I ask that you be especially kind to one another, and to yourselves, this week, as we come together as a community to mourn our losses.”
According to his LinkedIn profile, Copeland was involved with the Fordham Finance Society and the Fordham Alternative Investments Club. He was also a member of the Fordham University Rugby Football Club.
Copeland had previously worked as an intern at Tapad, deVere Group and Campbell Alliance and aspired to work in the financial industry or in corporate finance.
McShane also informed the community that “Campus Ministry will announce services for Elliott at Rose Hill, in consultation with his family, and will notify the community of their preferences regarding condolences. Staff from both Counseling Services and Campus Ministry will be standing by this week to help our students as they grapple with their loss.” The email advises students in need of support to additionally contact the Counseling Center, Campus Ministry or members of the Residential Life staff.
Copeland is the second member of the Fordham community who has died in the past week, following the death of Noah Goldstein on June 18, which was also auto-related.
According to The New York Daily News, Goldstein’s death had been the fourth fatal hit-and-run in eight days citywide.
In 2014, Mayor Bill de Blasio implemented the Vision Zero initiative to reduce auto-related deaths in New York City. In January, he claimed that 2015 was the safest year on New York City streets on record. According to data from New York City Department of Transportation and the NYPD, 134 pedestrians were killed in auto-related accidents in 2015, a drop from 139 deaths in 2014 and 183 deaths in 2013.

I am in utter shock, disbelief and completely devastated to her about Elliott. My son Justin called me today and was very upset when he told me the news of what had occurred. Our hearts are broken. There are no words at a time like this however I feel compelled to say something. My family and I spent a great deal of time getting to know the entire Copeland family year after year as we watched our boys, Elliot and Justin, play CASL soccer together as elementary and middle school aged boys in Raleigh NC. We became very good friends and enjoyed many laughs and good times on and off the field. We knew Elliot as an adorable sweet blonde boy. Although small in stature and somewhat reserved. He was a surprise out on the field with his tenacity and determination out on the soccer field. He gave it his all. As parents our weekends were completely monopolized by soccer practices, games and award celebrations. Yet, now as I’m writing this, they were truly wonderful years. It was a moment in time. I’m honored I was able to share in that part of Elliott’s life and the friendship that was forged with the Copeland family. I’m not surprised to read about how successful Elliott was as a Fordham student, an athlete, team captain and young man. He will be forever missed. He is a bright light. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family at this very sad time… Tony, Monique and Simon we are thinking of you all and hope we can be a support in the days and weeks ahead… Love Courtney Florian and family.

My heart goes out to the Copeland family at this sad news. I remember Elliott well from Middle School and know he had much to offer the people he encountered every day. He was a good soul and a great Middle Schooler. Love, Jim Kababik
