In 1863, Steve Bellán enrolled at St. John’s College. It would be another 44 years before the school was renamed Fordham University, but Bellán’s introduction to the rest of his life began in the rudimentary fields of the Fordham area.

Fordham Athletic Director David Roach recently announced his retirement, effective at the end of the academic year. In his eight years with Fordham, Roach contributed to the university’s winning tradition and an environment that allowed coaches and athletes to succeed.

In his senior year, Tarabek was recording career-high statistics before the season ended prematurely.

Quiet Spring for Fordham Club Sports

Last month, all Fordham club sporting events were canceled for the spring season following the COVID-19 outbreak. In some cases, the consequences were just as severe for club sport athletes as they were for their varsity counterparts.

The women’s basketball team, in addition to many others, had their seasons cut short in response to the spread of the coronavirus.

Inside the Final Days of Fordham Sports

Many Fordham athletes were affected by decisions around the NCAA ending all athletic competitions in early March. Athletes in the winter lost postseasons, while athletes in the spring lost months of play.

Slattery was consistently a strong competitor for the Rams during his time at Fordham.

Fordham Alumnus Takes on the Olympic Trials

Former top performer for the Rams’ men’s cross-country and track and field, Tom Slattery, GSBRH ’18, competed in his third marathon in three months in February. The first marathon was his first race across the distance, and the most recent was against the top marathoners in the country at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Team Trials.

Matt Tarabek, GSBRH '20, blasted a two-run home run in Fordham's third game to give the Rams an early 5-0 lead.

Fordham Baseball Dominates Iona in Weekend Series Sweep

March 10, 2020

In their first weekend series in the Bronx, Fordham baseball dominated Iona College in a three game sweep. They outscored their opponent 32-3 over the course of the weekend, with batters and pitchers easily handling the Gaels throughout each contest.

Fordham Women’s Basketball Falls in Stunning A10 Semifinal Loss, 60-55

March 10, 2020

The Fordham women’s basketball team blew a 17-point lead in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament against Virginia Commonwealth University. In the final minute, the Rams missed three of four free throws and lost 60-55, ending their bid for the NCAA Tournament. It is a bitter end to a season in which far more was expected of them.

Despite an inconsistent performance overall, several members of Fordham track did well enough to qualify for the ECAC/IC4A Championship in March.

Semisweet Run for Men’s and Women’s Track at Valentine Invitational

February 21, 2020

Fordham men’s and women’s track raced at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts, on Friday, Feb. 14, and Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. The Rams’ efforts were not extraordinary, but rewarding in that many will have the opportunity to race at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Championship on March 7 and 8.
