FCLC—Fordham University held its annual Christmas concert, the Festival of Lessons and Carols, on Dec. 1, at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle. The performers consisted of the Fordham University Choir, the Liturgical Choir, the Women’s Choir, the Bronx Arts Ensemble and six dancers from the Ailey program. It was a mix of song, dance and verse readings from various gospels. Students agreed that the concert was a great start to the holiday season.

The church was packed with guests who came to see the performance, so much so that many people stood in the back once all the seats were taken. “It was a great opportunity for the Fordham community and the local community to come together and celebrate the season,” said Paul Jochico, FCLC ’09.

The concert began with four organ preludes. Once everyone was seated, the two choirs sang various carols including “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” “Ave Maria” and “True Light.” In between every couple of songs, a passage from one of the various gospels was read.

Joel Rowe, FCLC ’09, who attended the concert, called it “a wonderful introduction to the holiday season.”

Kathleen Mroz, FCLC ’11, who sang with the Women’s Choir said, “In all the years I’ve been singing, this was definitely the most enjoyable concert for me. I loved the fact that the whole entire place sang along with us. I felt like everyone was really in the Christmas spirit.”

Six dancers from the Ailey/Fordham B.F.A. program performed while the choir sang, providing the audience with a visual interpretation of the carols. “It was very joyous and cheery,” said Heidi Mootoo, FCLC ’09, “especially the dancers.”

“Splendid,” said Dan Rolon, FCLC ’08 of the concert. “A beautiful interpretation of the season.”

Mroz said, “I’ve really enjoyed my first year in choir at Fordham. Both choirs sounded beautiful. Everyone is so friendly and dedicated. I can’t wait for next year.”
